About IVF and ICSI
In vitro fertilization (IVF) and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) are alternative options. Both procedures nearly always involve the woman first taking hormones to help the egg cells develop, and ovulation can also be triggered using hormones.
The egg cells are then removed using a thin hollow needle in a minor surgical procedure with local anesthesia or with painkillers and sedatives. The sperm cells can be obtained by masturbation, if possible. The actual fertilization takes place outside of the woman’s body:
